Dr. James E. Stubbs

Dr. James Elwood Stubbs
Born: 14 February 1838
Died: 15 June 1916

James was the second surviving son of Rev. Thomas Stubbs and Mary Kellett Cole. He was born in Poland, Ohio, and attended Allegheny College, Meadville, Pennsylvania. He became a Physician and practiced in Chicago, Illinois. He was a member of Phi Gamma Delta and Chicago Medical Society, Royal League, Plymouth. He died at his home in Chicago of a cerebral hemorrhage in 1916.

James first married Maria E. Durant on 29 June 1864.
They had one son:

Francis Gurney Stubbs (Born: 20 September 1868; Died: 26 May 1910)

James then married Susan M. Roberts in July 1885.
They had no children. There was a scandal relating to their marriage, however, as is seen in this excerpt from the New York Times:

ARRESTED FOR BIGAMY
CHICAGO, AUG. 13 (1885)---Dr. James E. Stubbs, State Examiner for the Royal Arcanium and a practicing physician of this city, was arrested today on a charge of bigamy. The complainant was Mrs. Marie E. Stubbs, of Meadville, Penn., who says she was married to Dr. Stubbs in 1864 at Meadville, and that he deserted her at Corry, Penn. She came here and filed a bill for separate maintenance, and while the proceedings were pending learned that her husband had married again. Dr. Stubbs says he obtained a divorce from his wife in Aurora, Kane County, July 9 last, and then married Susan Roberts, with whom he was living when arrested. Mrs. Stubbs the first says she was not notified of the divorce proceedings.
